Our Roots

All stakeholders benefit when the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) of purpose, people, planet is lived—even investors! With TBL in mind, Voyage Consulting Group was founded in 2016 to make high-end consulting accessible to small and mid-sized companies in the Midwest.

Our founder, Kelly Tyler Byrnes, had worked with some of the big firms as a client throughout her career, and she saw the waste and disruption those firms caused without results. She knew there had to be another way. She’s right!

Voyage Consulting Group is the other way.

We’re different from the big firms:
#1. Our flat structure eliminates duplication of work
#2. Clients don’t pay for consultants on-deck
#3. We don’t instigate scope creep
#4. We intentionally minimize client disruption
#5. Clients receive independent, objective insight without fear of improper influence
#6. Clients gain solutions for immediate execution
#7. We guarantee our work. Yes, that’s right.

Our Name

Our name comes from an article written by Clayton Christensen in Harvard Business Review in 2010. In the article How Will You Measure Your Life?, Dr. Christensen, a professor at Harvard Business School (HBS), wrote the following:

I apply my knowledge of the purpose of my life every day. It’s the single most useful thing I’ve ever learned. I promise my students that if they take the time to figure out their life purpose, they’ll look back on it as the most important thing they discovered at HBS.

If they don’t figure it out, they will just sail off without a rudder and get buffeted in the very rough seas of life. Clarity about their purpose will trump knowledge of activity-based costing, balanced scorecards, core competence, disruptive innovation, the four Ps, and the five forces.

Voyage Consulting Group exists so company leaders don’t sail off without a rudder, get buffeted in life’s rough seas, and ruin life’s journey. Kelly started this company to help leaders live their purpose, navigate rough seas, and make their life’s journey magnificent. She believes when leaders’ bring their true selves to their companies, they will impact people in positive ways, including but far beyond financial.

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
